Measurement and Analysis of the Standard Nursing Practice Times of the Reference Nursing Activities

Abstract
Purpose: This study was done to suggest the standard nursing practice time carried out according to standard nursing procedure in order to determine warrantably economic value of the nursing activity on the resource-based relative value scales.

Method: Through the workshop with the clinical practice expert panel and our research team classified all of the nursing activities for the general inpatient nursing units and hemodialysis unit and selected reference nursing activities. After that standard nursing procedures were identified. Standard nursing practice times were checked through 1:1 observation with timer in 2 tertiary hospitals in Seoul.

Result: 149 nursing activities were identified and categorized into 52 similar activities(family). 48 standard nursing activities were selected according to frequency, utilization of resource, continuity of the activity, variability by performer. Also, their standard nursing procedures were identified, and finally 43 standard nursing practice times were measured and analyzed. The result of the measurement, 29 nursing activities were spent below 10 minutes, 10 activities done within 10~30 minutes and 4 activities were spent above 30 minutes.

Conclusion: Through this study, 43 standard nursing practice times which carried out according to standard nursing procedures were checked through 1:1 observation. The results can be used as fundamental data for the proper nursing activity fee schedules on the basis of resource-based relative value scales.
